Why it’s interesting

Varkos is an AI dog “summoned” into a glass jar on your desktop. When left alone it can sleep, chase its tail, chew a bone, and play with a ball. It also listens to speech, answers aloud with captions, looks at images dragged into the app, and hangs those images inside its jar. Two included scenarios take it outside: The Old Road is a small action RPG with exploration, riddles, and monsters, while The Escape asks you to guide it through an office patrolled by robots. After roughly twenty active minutes and enough new experiences, it reappraises the interaction and gradually changes its personality. The official page provides substantial video demonstrations, so the concept is understandable without installing anything.

How to try it

Watch the official demonstrations before deciding whether to install the free alpha. The Mac build requires an Apple M2 or newer and 16GB of memory, with an M4 Pro or better recommended. Windows requires an NVIDIA GPU with at least 10GB of VRAM, with 16GB recommended. Both need about 9GB of storage. First launch requests microphone permission, although typed input is also available. The creator says speech, vision, and behavior models all run locally and work offline, with update checks started manually. The package is not yet open source, and testing is limited to an M4 Max Mac and an RTX 5080 PC, so other hardware, OS versions, and microphones are not guaranteed.

Requirements and sources

Pantelis Kalogiros publicly launched this version on September 23, 2026. Both official download endpoints respond, while the project page hosts the product image and multiple demonstrations. Existing features must be separated from plans: the two games, local models, and image and voice interactions are demonstrated now; Linux and iOS builds, model selection, an extension API, and a general open-source framework remain future work. This entry reports the creator's local-processing claim rather than treating it as an independent security audit, and it never recommends bypassing operating-system warnings. Readers who only want to understand the project need not download software or grant microphone access.
