Why it’s interesting

MEMORY is the second generation of Sougwen Chung’s D.O.U.G. drawing system. Generation 1 mirrored the artist’s live gesture. MEMORY instead uses neural networks trained on Chung’s archived drawing behavior and visual language. During a performance, the robotic arm draws from that learned memory while Chung works beside it, so the machine’s line is an interpretation of previous marks rather than a direct copy of the hand moving beside it.

How to try it

Open the artist’s official page and watch the process animation and collaboration photographs. Then read the NTT ICC archive, which clearly distinguishes first-generation imitation from second-generation memory. The website is an artwork archive, not a browser tool: visitors cannot upload their own handwriting or remotely control the arm.

Requirements and sources

The documentation is free and needs no account. The work is dated 2017, and the documented Open Space 2017 exhibition opened on May 27, which is used as the verifiable public date. Sougwen Chung’s site and NTT ICC both support the neural-network, archive, robotic-arm, and simultaneous-drawing claims. The 1600×1066 cover is served by the artist’s site and credited to Sougwen Chung.
