Why it’s interesting
Matisse: The Wild Palette invites visitors to move beyond the frames of four early Henri Matisse paintings. SFMOMA and Google Arts & Culture used Veo to extend the works into animated, imagined spaces shaped by Fauvist color. The result is more considered than a portrait that merely blinks or moves: broad areas of color continue into an environment, while museum context explains the original artwork. The experiment is a specific online exhibition experience rather than an open-ended video-generation tool.
How to try it
Open the Google Arts & Culture experiment and select one of the four featured paintings. Woman with a Hat is a useful starting point: follow the transition from the original composition into the generated scene, then return to the contextual material and compare another work. The experience is free to view in a browser and does not require local installation. Treat the animation as an imaginative response to the painting, not as a reconstruction of a real space outside the canvas.

Google’s first-party announcement states that Veo was used to expand the four paintings, with SFMOMA curatorial and education teams involved in selecting source material and shaping the animation boundaries.
