Why it’s interesting
The Nonsense Laboratory treats spelling as sound material rather than a correctness test. Its five tools mix word sounds, respell text with different letters, tune how phrases feel in the mouth, sequence virtual mouth movements, and explore an endless field of invented words. The experience is completed by reading the results aloud and hearing a familiar phrase become strangely physical.
How to try it
Open the standalone experiment and choose Skip introduction. A short machine-learning model load appears before the menu. In this review the load completed and all five tools—Mixer, Mouthfeel Tuner, Respeller, Sequencer, and Explorer—became available. Start with Mixer and combine two familiar English words, then compare that result with Respeller, which tries to preserve sound while radically changing the visible spelling.
Requirements and sources
The project is free and does not require an account. It is designed around English spelling and pronunciation, so other languages may produce weaker results. The official page dates it to April 2021, credits Allison Parrish, and notes support from the Artists + Machine Intelligence Grant. It identifies a bespoke code library and machine-learning model as the engine of the tools. Use ordinary words rather than private or sensitive text.
